BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB Athletics will participate in the Extra Yard for Teachers Week when the Blazers host Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 16 at noon.
The College Football Playoff Foundation established the Extra Yard for Teachers program in 2015. The mission of Extra Yard for Teachers is to elevate the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers. With the help of valued partners, the CFP Foundation is spearheading the change towards elevating the teaching profession using the high profile of college football through four pillars: resources, recognition, recruitment and professional development.
With the goal of decreasing teachers' out-of-pocket expenses, the CFP Foundation seeks to provide funds directly into teachers' classrooms. Conference USA is receiving $150,000 ($10,000 per member) from the College Football Playoff Foundation to give back to teachers in each of the C-USA markets.
Last year nearly 2,000 teachers at 160 schools throughout C-USA's 14 member communities were directly impacted by this initiative. In Birmingham, 100 educators will be awarded $100 gift cards to supplement their efforts in the classroom.
As a part of the efforts, the Blazers will wear special helmet stickers and share their stories about their favorite educators during the week. Fans are encouraged to participate by sharing their own stories to sportspromo@uab.edu about favorite teachers and school memories. Select entries will be shared on the video board during Saturday's game.
"We talk every day about why our players are here, and it's to gain an education," Head Coach Bill Clark said. "UAB is a world-class educational institution and it wouldn't be made possible without the hard work and dedication of teachers all across the country. We are excited to participate in this initiative and be able to use our platform of college football to help support a fantastic cause."
Tickets for Saturday's game vs. Coastal Carolina are available for just $20. Educators can receive special ticket price when ordering online with the promo code EDUCATION. Fans are encouraged to order online and take advantage of the print at home ticket option to reduce wait times and lines at the box office on game day. Click here for tickets.
