BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - When UAB announced it was going to wear special uniforms to honor patients at nearby Children's Harbor on Homecoming vs. Louisiana Tech, everyone knew it was going to be a special day, but how it unfolded was truly one of the top moments in college football this season.
Sporting alternate grey jerseys with the names of patients on their backs, the Blazers hosted the Bulldogs in a back-and-forth game which came down to the final play.
With Louisiana Tech lined up for a game-winning 30-yard field goal with three seconds remaining, defensive end Stacy Keely made the play of the season by blocking the field goal and making the ensuing tackle to preserve UAB's 23-22 victory.
Inspired by the patients of Children's Harbor, UAB defeated Louisiana Tech for the first time in program history.
Throughout the week leading up to the game, players were able to meet the patients of who they would be wearing on their jerseys, and the Blazers released a special uniform reveal the night before the game.
Following the game, 10-year-old Emme Nichols, who survived a brain tumor, delivered the postgame locker room speech which was picked up by many national outlets and aired on SportsCenter that evening.
Those alternate grey uniforms will be worn in 10 days when UAB takes on Ohio University in the 2017 Bahamas Bowl. The game is set for Dec. 22 at 11:30 a.m. CST on ESPN.
