BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Capping off its historic 2017 season, the UAB football team will play Ohio University in the 2017 Bahamas Bowl on Friday, Dec. 22 at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. Kick is set for 11:30 a.m. CST on ESPN.
"The amount of work our coaches and players have put in over the past two years has been incredible and we are thrilled to play in the Bahamas Bowl," said head coach Bill Clark. "Ohio University is a very solid team led by an outstanding coach in Frank Solich and it is going to be a great game. Our players will be ready for the challenge and look to become the first team to win a bowl game at UAB."
The Blazers (8-4, 6-2 C-USA) will be playing in just their second bowl game in program history. UAB rewrote the record books this season which was highlighted by establishing a program record for FBS wins with eight. UAB finished the regular season by winning six of its final eight games.
Among the many accomplishments this season included a record-setting year of support as the Blazers led Conference USA in attendance by averaging 26,375 fans per game, including a program record crowd of 45,212 for #theReturn vs. Alabama A&M on Sept. 2 to open the season.
"We are honored to accept an invitation to play in this years' Bahamas Bowl against such a great opponent as Ohio University," said UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram. "Our coaches and players have represented our university extremely well throughout the entire season and this is a tremendous reward for their hard work. We look forward to playing another nationally televised game and watching this remarkable team cap off their season with one more game."
Offensively, quarterback A.J. Erdely had a fantastic season throwing and running the ball. The junior was 181-293-4 for 2,077 yards and 16 touchdowns, while adding 295 rushing yards and a school record-tying 13 touchdowns. His backfield mate, true freshman Spencer Brown, shattered the UAB record books on his way to compiling 1,292 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. His rushing total is the third most in UAB history and he has set every freshman rushing record possible which was held by Jordan Howard.
Defensively, the Blazers were led by a pair of All-American candidates in seniors Tevin Crews and Darious Williams. Crews paced the Blazers in total tackles (95) and tackles for loss (12) and is the only player in Conference USA to rank in the top 10 in each of those categories. Williams ranks No. 2 nationally in passes defended at 1.7 per game and has compiled five interceptions and 15 pass breakups, both of which lead Conference USA.
Members of the Mid-American Conference, Ohio finished the regular season at 8-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The Bobcats boast a potent offense that averaged 38.9 points per game and scored over 40 points in six games.
Ohio averaged 244.2 rushing yards per game and has three players with 600 or more rushing yards this season in A.J. Ouellette (980), Nathan Rourke (882) and Dorian Brown (605). Rourke has also thrown for 2,018 yards and 15 touchdowns.
