Lee Moon, who has more than 30 years experience as a university athletics administrator and coach, including stints as a Director of Athletics at two Division I-A institutions, was named Senior Associate Director of Athletics at UAB in September of 2004.
A native of Roanoke, Va., Moon brought to UAB a depth of experience after an extensive career in athletics administration and coaching at the collegiate level.
Moon served as Athletic Director from 1996-2003 at the University of Wyoming, where he oversaw the Cowboys' $15 million budget. Prior to that time, he was AD at Marshall University from 1988-96.
Before going to Marshall, Moon spent three years at Kansas State, first as Assistant AD for Operations and then Associate Director of Athletics.
Moon played football at Virginia Military Institute and at the semi-pro level with the Roanoke Buckskins. He began his coaching career at Virginia's Staunton Military Academy and was a graduate assistant at the University of Virginia, where he earned a master's degree in education.
Moon later became an assistant coach at Duke University from 1973-76 before moving back to the University of Virginia, where he served on the coaching staff from 1976-81. From 1982-85, he was on the staff at Mississippi State University before moving to Manhattan, Kan., where he served as interim Head Football Coach and Assistant Director of Operations.
PERSONAL: Moon married the former Connie Gray in the summer of 2005. Additionally, he has two sons: Lee Moon Jr. (30), who is the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at Fresno State University; and Brian (27), who is currently doing his medical school residency at West Virginia University.
