Tyson Mathews came to UAB in 2008 as an assistant director of athletic media relations. He oversees the media relations efforts for the Blazers' baseball, volleyball and women's tennis teams.

Prior to his arrival at UAB, Mathews spent two years as a graduate assistant in the Athletics Communications & Marketing office at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. At Ball State, he served as the primary sports information contact for the baseball and field hockey programs, while also assisting with each of the university's 18 varsity sports programs.

Mathews also completed his undergraduate studies at Ball State and worked for two years as a sports information student assistant, helping mainly with the Cardinals' men's basketball and men's and women's golf teams.

In the summer of 2005, Mathews completed an internship in the statistics office at the NCAA in Indianapolis, Ind. He did extensive work on the NCAA Football Records Book, the NCAA Ice Hockey Records Book and the Women's College World Series Records Book.

In addition to his experience in the sports information field, Mathews has also worked as a sports reporter, covering mainly high school sports for several newspapers, including The (Muncie, Ind.) Star Press.

An Indiana native, Mathews graduated from the Honors College at Ball State and earned his bachelor's degree in journalism in 2006.

He is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
