Justin Mackey is in his second season at UAB, serving as the Director of Student-Athlete Support Services and working directly with the men's basketball program. He also directs the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and life skills program for student-athletes at UAB.
Mackey joined the Blazers after spending nine years at the University of Kansas in multiple student-athlete support positions, most recently as Associate Director for Academic & Career Counseling. In this position Mackey directed academic counseling efforts for the women's basketball and softball teams and assisted with degree completion programs for men's basketball student-athletes who left college early for the NBA Draft. During this time he worked with three first team Academic All-Americans and numerous Academic All-Big 12 Selections.
From 2004-08, Mackey worked with the men's and women's basketball teams at Kansas as the Assistant Director of the Strategic Tutoring Program. He worked directly with the Jayhawk men's basketball NCAA National Championship team in 2008, which graduated all five senior players.
Mackey was born in Bonner Springs, Kan. where he attended Bonner Springs High School and competed in cross country, track & field, basketball and baseball before competing in cross country at the collegiate level. He graduated from Kansas in 2004 and received his master's degree from the same school in 2008.
Mackey is married to the former Molly Bachand, and the couple resides in Birmingham.
