Learning Specialist/Mentor Coordinator
Wayne K. Hamberger joined UAB Athletics in July 2010 as the Learning Specialist for Student-Athlete Support Services. As the Learning Specialist, Hamberger is responsible for equipping individuals in the athletic department (both students and staff) with the tools and resources to effectively facilitate the learning process and the academic mentoring program. In addition, he is the department liaison to Disability Support Services.
Prior to coming to UAB, Hamberger was a mental health professional for the University of Alabama, School of Social Work, Youth Services Institute, working at the Chalkville Assessment Center of DYS in Chalkville, Alabama where he provided psychological and academic testing and evaluation for new students. Additionally, Hamberger provided individual and group counseling services in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Trauma & Grief.
Hamberger is a graduate of Jacksonville State University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with English Minor. He went on to complete the Master's program in Counseling and Development, becoming an Alabama Licensed Counselor in 1995 and National Board Certified Counselor in 1996, both of which he retains today.
Hamberger operated a private practice in counseling in Anniston, Alabama from 1995 - 2005 working exclusively with Alabama DHR cases in a five-county area and Calhoun County Family Court system. He maintained extensive working relationships with Anniston City and Calhoun County Schools, providing academic and behavioral counseling services. Hamberger has 800+ hours of professional development training in the counseling and human development fields. While in private practice, Hamberger worked as a volunteer counselor for the Jacksonville State Football Team in 2003-04.
Hamberger was a guest on several Calhoun County radio and television talk shows and was a frequent presenter at local agency trainings on subjects in the mental health field.
