Nov. 24, 2010
Just a quick note this week as we get ready for turkey, basketball and football...all within 72 hours of each other.
Last weekend wasn't a total loss...in fact, it wasn't bad, at all. Football kept the "Bones" in Birmingham by knocking off Memphis, and while basketball dropped a game at Arizona State, the Blazers played pretty well and had a chance to win. It was a quality performance against a Pac-10 team on the road early in the season. Mike Davis wasn't disappointed with his team's play, but he was disappointed in the loss.
The Green and Gold looked like two different teams on Tuesday night at Bartow Arena. One team got off to a good start...then the other team showed up to finish the first half. That squad, thank goodness, stayed in the locker room in the second half. An "inspired" bunch of Blazers came out and simply blitzed South Alabama to start the second half and cruised to a big win. Let's hope that is the team that travels to and plays all 40 minutes against Arkansas on Friday in Little Rock.
UAB football closes out the 2010 campaign in Houston this holiday weekend. The Blazers take on the Rice Owls in the season finale. Neil Callaway and company have a chance to finish with a two-game win streak, thanks to another big day offensively last Saturday against Memphis. Explosive plays helped the Blazers to their second straight win in the "Battle for the Bones," and they'll need more of that on Saturday. Rice has "figured it out" on offense the last two weeks. The Owls hung 62 points and over 600 yards on East Carolina last Saturday. Looks like we could have a shootout on Saturday at Rice Stadium...not a bad way to wrap things up.
The bad news is I can't be in Little Rock and Houston this weekend. The good news is both games will air on the Blazer Sports Network. JD Byars and Steve Mitchell will have the call in Little Rock, while I'll be joined by Jon Gentile, John Whitcomb and Otis Leverette on Saturday at Rice.
But before two big ballgames, I'll get some time at home with the family for Thanksgiving. I hope you all get to do the same. I'm very thankful for the opportunity to work for a great company, at a great school and with amazing people.
I hope you all have a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
"Talk" to you this weekend...GO BLAZERS!!!
