BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee collected an impressive 2,234 pounds of canned food during this year's Conference USA Let's SAAC Hunger initiative.
This year's canned food donations, which will be given to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, represents one of the larger single-drive donations the local food bank has ever received.
"We are thankful for the support from our coaches and staff at UAB for helping us put on such a successful food drive," UAB Director of Student-Athlete Support Services Justin Mackey said. "Our student-athletes did a fantastic job of promoting this food drive and working their tails off to make it a huge success."
Student-athletes worked tirelessly collecting canned food donations at UAB athletic events during the week of Oct. 1-8. Blazer fans showed up in full force and helped make this year's initiative a success.
"Food drives are one of our main sources of food and we are ecstatic with the success that UAB had," Community Food Bank of Central Alabama Engagement Coordinator Brooke McKinley said. "Food drives such as this one help us to offer diversity in the type of foods we offer to hungry families in our service area."
