BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior tight end Kennard Backman of the football team was named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced on Monday. The Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes who succeed on and off their respective fields of play.
Backman played a pivotal a role in the UAB football team’s season-opening 48-10 victory against Troy on Saturday, Aug. 30. Backman hauled in a team-high four receptions for 43 yards and two touchdowns against the Trojans. The 2014 John Mackey Award Watch List honoree now has eight touchdown catches in his collegiate career.
The Austell, Ga. native excels in the classroom, as well. The finance major owns a 3.07 cumulative GPA. He has been named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll twice in his career.
Backman and the UAB football team are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Mississippi State. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. CT in Starkville, Miss.
