BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Justin Mackey, who has been with the UAB Athletics Academics Department for over two years, has been named the Blazers' Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development.

A native of Bonner Springs, Kan., Mackey has spent the last year as UAB's Director of Student-Athlete Support Services and worked directly with the Blazers' men's basketball program as well as community service initiatives through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

"I am excited about the opportunity to expand my role within UAB Athletics," Mackey said. "I want to thank Jeff Guin and Brian Mackin for their support of our Student-Athlete Development initiatives over the past year and their confidence in me to continue to bring excellent development opportunities to all UAB student-athletes."

In his new role, Mackey will focus on career development, community relations, life skills and SAAC with UAB student-athletes. Mackey and his staff will work closely with the Academics staff on providing career choice information to UAB student-athletes and guidance on career preparation.

"Our department is very excited about the creation of this program," UAB's Associate Athletic Director for Student Services Jeff Guin said. "In today’s world a degree might get you a job.  We want our student-athletes to have a career, and our staff feels it is important that we educate and provide opportunities to our student-athletes to learn the necessary career and professional skills required to be successful after college."
