BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The NCAA released the latest Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR) scores on Wednesday and the report showed that all but three UAB teams have a multi-year rate of 950 or better with nine of the Blazers' programs scoring 970 or above.
Six Blazer teams (men's basketball, baseball, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's tennis and rifle) finished with perfect scores of 1,000 for the 2010-11 year, an increase from the five teams that recorded a perfect score in last year's report. For the third straight year, the women's tennis program earned a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA after ranking in the top 10 percent of its sport.
The 1,000 score for men's basketball in 2010-11 marked the second consecutive year the program registered a perfect score.
Fifteen of 16 UAB sports earned scores of 950 or better for the 2010-11 year with women's golf just below that mark at 946.
"We are again extremely pleased with the continued academic progress of our teams and want to commend our student-athletes for their accomplishments in the classroom," said UAB Director of Athletics Brian Mackin. "The numbers released today demonstrate the commitment that we put on academics and our APR."
The current APR numbers released by the NCAA Wednesday include data based on the multi-year period from 2007-08 through 2010-11. Every Division I team calculates its APR each academic year based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete.
