BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB Athletics Department has begun an initiative to raise $25,000 in creation of the Alan Ogg Memorial Scholarship. The funds raised in honor of the former Blazer basketball star will be used for student-athlete scholarships at UAB.
Ogg, a former 7-2 center, was one of coach Gene Bartow's outstanding players at UAB in the late 1980s. He passed away last November at the age of 42 after complications from an infection.
Ogg attended Gardendale High School before coming to UAB in 1986.
"I am very appreciative and touched that UAB has chosen to honor Alan in this way," said Nita Ogg, Alan's widow. "Alan always had a lot of fond memories of his days at UAB and he remained a loyal supporter of the Blazers his entire life."
Ogg played at UAB from 1986-90. He is still the Blazers' all-time leader in blocked shots with 266 and is third in career field goal percentage (.559). He set a single-game record for UAB with 12 blocks against Florida A&M in 1988.
Ogg played in 123 games for the Blazers and made 75 starts. He was named second-team All-Sun Belt Conference in 1989-90. In 1986-87, Ogg was named to the Sun Belt All-Freshman team.
After finishing his career at UAB, Ogg saw action for three seasons in the NBA, playing two years for the Miami Heat and later with Milwaukee and Washington.
"Alan Ogg's name will always be synonymous with the outstanding tradition of UAB Basketball," said UAB Associate Athletic Director for Development Leon Ryan. "He remained an active supporter of our program and part of the Blazer family, and we feel it is absolutely appropriate that we create the Alan Ogg Memorial Scholarship in his honor.
"We are confident and optimistic that Blazer fans, the Gardendale community and others touched by Alan will support this endeavor."
Donations for the Alan Ogg Memorial Scholarship should be made payable to UAB Athletics with the memo "Alan Ogg Memorial Scholarship." Donations can be sent to:
