BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB Department of Athletics and Blazer Boosters hosted the annual Belles & Whistles Dinner and Fundraiser on Thursday, April 25, on the floor of Bartow Arena.
The event raised over $35,000 and all proceeds will equally benefit women's student-athlete scholarships and locker room facility improvements. Belles & Whistles (formerly the Blazer Women's Athletics Society) has raised over $350,000 since its inception in 2008. UAB Athletics presently sponsors 11 female sports (approximately 135 student-athletes), which results in more than $2.1 million in annual scholarship costs.
The keynote speakers were UAB Athletics Director Brian Mackin, Blazer women's tennis head coach Lisa Jackson, current UAB track and field student-athlete Rachel Harley, and Alicia Huey, who is the president of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders and an avid supporter of UAB Athletics.
Lenora Pate, a lawyer with Sirote & Permutt, P.C. and a graduate of UAB, served as the emcee. Coach Randy Norton, the new head coach of the Blazers' women's basketball program, was the special guest speaker at this year's dinner.
