Student-Athlete Academic Awards To Be Presented At Wednesday's Basketball Game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB student-athletes will be recognized for their academic success Wednesday night when University President Carol Z. Garrison presents a pair of prestigious academic achievement awards to Blazers' Director of Athletics Watson Brown.

In addition, 103 UAB student-athletes will be recognized as Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll (3.00 GPA and higher) recipients, with 12 of them honored as Medal of Honor (3.75 GPA and above) winners.

These academic awards will be announced during halftime of UAB's men's basketball game with DePaul (tipoff is 7:00 p.m.) on Wednesday.

Dr. Garrison will present Brown with the 2002 USA Today/NCAA Academic Achievement Award for "highest student-athlete graduation rate above the student body average." UAB ranked in the nation's top 10 in this category among Division I-A schools.

The second award Brown will receive on behalf of UAB Athletics is the 2002 USA Today/NCAA Academic Achievement Award for "highest student-athlete graduation rate improvement." Again, the Blazers were recognized as being in the top 10 nationally among I-A programs.
