Gene Bartow passed away at his home in Birmingham on Tuesday evening. He will be laid to rest on Monday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The family of Gene Bartow has announced the funeral plans for the Hall of Famer and longtime UAB head men's basketball coach and athletic director. Bartow passed away on Jan. 3 at the age of 81 after a two-year bout with stomach cancer.
On Sunday, Jan. 8, there will be a public visitation for Coach Bartow from 3-6 p.m. at Bartow Arena. Fans are welcome to come to the arena to pay their final respects to Bartow.
The funeral will be held Monday, Jan. 9 at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. The church is located at 2061 Kentucky Avenue, Vestavia Hills, AL, 35216.
Both events are open to the public.
A 2009 inductee into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, Bartow led teams for more than 34 years, coaching at Central Missouri State, Valparaiso, Memphis State, Illinois, UCLA and ultimately UAB. He compiled 647 wins and coached his teams to 12 NCAA tournaments, a pair of Final Fours and one national championship game appearance. He was the national coach of the year with Memphis State in 1973.
In 18 years at the helm of the UAB men's basketball program, Bartow owned a .643 winning percentage with a record of 366-203. He coached the Blazers to 11 seasons of at least 20 wins.
