Mary Bowers Field

The UAB Softball program is the first sport-specific beneficiary in a line of Blazer teams to see results from a facility improvement plan initiated in the fall of 2007. This plan includes the multi-phase construction of a new on-campus softball complex, which will see its first year of action in the spring of 2010.

The complex is built adjacent to and to the south of the existing baseball complex, Jerry D. Young Memorial Field, and it has required demolition of the former tennis complex that was encompassed by 12th Street South.

The new facility includes the following amenities:

  • Recessed dugouts with restroom facilities
  • Bullpens for each team
  • Scorer's platform with public address system
  • Ample storage
  • Field lighting
  • Seating for 350
  • New state-of-the-art scoreboard with video capability with a 13.5 x 17 foot screen

The recessed dugouts each house approximately 500 square feet of space, including one restroom.

The bullpens for each team are located on the corners of the outfield just past each dugout. The space is comfortable for two pitchers to be able to warm up at any given time.

The scorer's platform features a working area for gameday staff that includes housing of the scoreboard/video board controls, sound system controls, and the public address announcer microphone. The area also has both phone and data capabilities for gameday operation and visiting media. The public address system features four speakers mounted to light posts around the backstop and dugouts. The control unit is located inside the scorer's platform.

A storage room with approximately 140 square feet is adjacent to the home dugout on the first-base side. There are two additional areas in the covered hitting facility that provide an estimated total of 800-1,000 square feet of storage.

Six poles are mounted around the facility to provide lighting for practice and games when ambient light is not satisfactory.

Metal bleacher seating areas are located behind the backstop and in between the dugouts for a maximum capacity of 350 people. All seats will be sold as general admission on a first-come, first-served basis. Information on season or single-game tickets to UAB Softball may be found by clicking here. Currently, the new UAB Softball complex will share restroom and concessions facilities with the UAB Baseball facility, Young Memorial Field.

As part of an new partnership agreement with ISP Sports, the Blazers' multimedia rights holder, UAB has added new, state-of-the art scoreboards for Bartow Arena, Young Memorial Field, and the new on-campus softball facility. The scoreboards, which are produced by industry leader Daktronics, provide additional information and video capabilities that will feature LED technology while offering expanded inventory opportunities for corporate partners. The video equipment is often run by a new mobile unit that will provide live game production services and instant replay capabilities. The softball scoreboard features static spaces for sponsor advertisements, as well as plenty of opportunities to rotate picture and video graphics on the 13.5 x 17 foot video board. The official scoreboard features ten innings of run counts per team, as well as total runs, hits, and errors columns. There are also be sections for an at-bat notifier, balls, strikes, outs, and a hit/error notifier.

Due to the generosity of the Bowers family, the UAB softball team will rename the complex to Mary Bowers Field during the 2016 season.
