UAB FACILITIES INITIATIVE
The UAB Softball program is the first sport-specific beneficiary in a line of Blazer teams to see results from a facility improvement plan initiated in the fall of 2007. This plan includes the multi-phase construction of a new on-campus softball complex, which will see its first year of action in the spring of 2010.
The complex is built adjacent to and to the south of the existing baseball complex, Jerry D. Young Memorial Field, and it has required demolition of the former tennis complex that was encompassed by 12th Street South.
The new facility includes the following amenities:
The recessed dugouts each house approximately 500 square feet of space, including one restroom.
The bullpens for each team are located on the corners of the outfield just past each dugout.
The scorer's platform features a working area for gameday staff that includes housing of the scoreboard/video board controls, sound system controls, and the public address announcer microphone. The area also has both phone and data capabilities for gameday operation and visiting media. The public address system features four speakers mounted to light posts around the backstop and dugouts. The control unit is located inside the scorer's platform.
A storage room with approximately 140 square feet is adjacent to the home dugout on the first-base side. There are two additional areas in the covered hitting facility that provide an estimated total of 800-1,000 square feet of storage.
Six poles are mounted around the facility to provide lighting for practice and games when ambient light is not satisfactory.
Metal bleacher seating areas are located behind the backstop and in between the dugouts for a maximum capacity of 350 people. All seats will be sold as general admission on a first-come, first-served basis. Information on
