UAB's commitment to our student-athletes includes recognizing and nominating students for their success both on and off the playing field. As such, members of the academic staff work with coaches, media relations and our Faculty Athletic Representative to nominate students for awards throughout the year.

Below is a list of awards for which students are regularly nominated.

UAB Academic Awards

2011 Senior Award Recipients

  • Presidential Honors (4.0 GPA)
  • Dean's List (3.6 GPA)
  • Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges: Applications for those students who are undergraduates and are a junior or senior academically with 24 UAB semester hours and a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • 5th-Year Scholarships: Each of the below-listed scholarships are available to student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility but are working on complete their undergraduate degree.
    • Gene Bartow Scholarship: Given to a senior who has exhausted eligibility but has not completed an undergraduate degree at UAB. Must be attending UAB.
    • Lillyan Fahy Scholarship: Given to a senior who has exhausted eligibility but has not completed an undergraduate degree at UAB. Must be attending UAB.
    • Dr. Jerry D. Young Memorial Scholarship: Given to a senior who has exhausted eligibility but has not completed an undergraduate degree at UAB. Must be attending UAB.
    • Snoozy's Scholarship: Given to a senior football player who has exhausted eligibility but has not completed his undergraduate degree at UAB. Must be attending UAB.
    • Hallerman Scholarship: Given to a senior male basketball player who has exhausted eligibility but has not completed his undergraduate degree at UAB. Must be attending UAB.
    • Wayne Smith Scholarship: Given to a senior football player who has exhausted eligibility but has not completed his undergraduate degree at UAB. Must be attending UAB.
    • Harry "The Hat" Scholarship: Given to a senior baseball player who has exhausted eligibility but has not completed his undergraduate degree at UAB. Must be attending UAB.
    • Old Boys Scholarship: Given to a senior male soccer player who has exhausted eligibility but has not completed his degree at UAB. Must be attending UAB.
  • Post Graduate Scholarship:
    • Mervyn Goldstein Memorial Scholarship: Given to a senior basketball player who has exhausted eligibility, graduated and plans to attend a UAB graduate school program.

Conference USA Awards

  • Commissioner's Medal of Honor (cumulative 3.75 GPA and above)
  • Commissioner's Honor Roll (cumulative 3.0 GPA or above)
  • Sport Academic Award: The team in each sport with the highest GPA
  • Institutional Academic Award: The institution with the highest student-athlete GPA in conference-sponsored sports
  • Post Graduate Scholarship: one female and one male nominee per institution
  • SAAC Coaches Choice Award: Recognizes a coach
  • Sportsmanship Award: The conference sponsors a Sportsmanship Award in all sports

NCAA Awards

  • The Freedom Forum-NCAA Sports-Journalism Scholarship Program: The program assists deserving full-time students in their final year of study and is designed to foster freedoms of speech and press while promoting quality sports journalism education at the collegiate level.
  • The Walter Byers Scholarship: Awarded to a graduating senior or a person enrolled in a graduate study at an NCAA member institution while completing the last year of eligibility per NCAA Bylaw 14.2, whichever comes later.
  • Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics: Applicants must be seeking admission or have been accepted into a sports administration or related program that will help the applicant obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics, such as athletics administrator, coach, athletic trainer or other career that provides a direct service to intercollegiate athletics.
  • NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship: Awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
  • Division I Degree Completion Scholarship: Applicants must have completed eligibility for athletics-related aid at a Division I member institution before applying and must be within 30 semester hours of their degree requirements.
